The Goat and the Leopard's Visit

A Goat was preparing a feast because his mother-in-law was coming to visit. He cooked yams and made a delicious soup. Just as he was about to eat, the Leopard appeared at his door. "Friend Goat," the Leopard said, "I am your new neighbour." The terrified Goat had no choice but to invite the Leopard in and share his meal. The Leopard ate everything, leaving the Goat with nothing for his mother-in-law. This happened every day for a week. The Goat grew thin and desperate. He went to a wise old Tortoise for advice. The Tortoise told him to place a large, flat stone in the fire until it was glowing red-hot and then cover it with a big plantain leaf. When the Leopard arrived for his daily meal and sat down, the Goat offered him the "special, hot seat." The Leopard sat on the leaf, and the red-hot stone burned him terribly. He leaped up with a roar of pain and ran from the Goat's house, never to return. The story teaches that even a small and fearful creature can defeat a powerful bully if he uses his intelligence.
