The Lion, the Dog, and the First Warrior
A long time ago, the Lion was the fiercest creature, but the Dog was the cleverest hunter. They were rivals. A young Maasai man wanted to prove his bravery to become a warrior (moran). He went to the Lion and said, "I will not fight you, but I will help you." He showed the Lion how to use the direction of the wind to stalk his prey. He went to the Dog and said, "I will not hunt against you, but with you." He learned the Dog's tracking skills and its loyalty. One day, a great beast, a monster that was neither lion nor hyena, began terrorizing the land. The Lion could not defeat it with strength, and the Dog could not defeat it with cunning. The young man, now a warrior, combined what he had learned. He used the Dog's tracking to find the monster and the Lion's stalking technique to get close. He fought with the courage of a lion and the intelligence of a loyal dog and killed the beast. He became the first great warrior chief, having proven that a true moran must possess both the fierce courage of the Lion and the clever loyalty of the Dog.
