The Hare Who Rode the Ostrich
The Hare wanted to cross a wide, dangerous plain filled with predators, but he was too small to make the journey safely. He saw a flock of Ostriches and devised a plan. He went to the lead Ostrich and said, "I have been sent by Nkai. A great flood is coming, and Nkai has commanded me to lead you to the safety of the high mountains." The Ostriches were frightened and believed him. "But how can you lead us if you are so slow?" they asked. "You must carry me!" the Hare replied. "One of you must allow me to ride on your back so I can guide you." A young, strong Ostrich agreed. The Hare climbed on its back. "Faster! Faster!" he shouted, "The flood is coming!" The Ostrich began to run at its incredible speed, easily outrunning all the lions and hyenas. It carried the Hare safely all the way across the plain to the foothills of the mountains. When they arrived, the Hare hopped off, bowed, and said, "Thank you for the ride. The prophecy is fulfilled." The foolish Ostriches were left confused, while the clever Hare had used their fear to get exactly what he wanted.
