The Tortoise and the King's Wisdom
A great Zulu king wanted to find the wisest person in his kingdom to be his advisor. He set a challenge: "Bring me something that is both here and not here." Wise men brought riddles, diviners brought prophecies, but none could satisfy the king. A humble Tortoise came before the king. He presented the king with a single, glowing ember held between two green leaves. "What is this?" the king asked. The Tortoise replied, "This is fire. It is here, for you can see its light and feel its heat. But it is also not here, for as soon as you grasp it, its form is gone, and if you leave it, it will consume the very leaves that hold it and disappear." The king was amazed by this profound and simple demonstration of the nature of power and existence. He made the Tortoise his chief advisor, proving that true wisdom is not found in loud pronouncements but in a deep understanding of the nature of things.
