The Hare and the Hyena's Tug-of-War
The Hare and the Hyena were arguing about a piece of land. To settle it, the Hare proposed a tug-of-war. The Hyena, being much stronger, laughed and agreed. The Hare gave the Hyena one end of a very long vine and told him to go deep into the forest. The Hare then took the other end down to the beach, where a great Whale was resting in the shallows. The Hare told the Whale, "Great spirit of the sea, the Hyena on the land is boasting that he is stronger than you and can pull you from the water!" The Whale was insulted and angry. The Hare gave the Whale the other end of the vine. He then hid in the middle and gave the signal. The Hyena pulled with all his might, but the Whale in the ocean was immensely more powerful. The Whale began to pull steadily, dragging the confused and terrified Hyena through the forest, over rocks and through thorns, until he was completely exhausted and defeated. The Hare had used the power of the sea to defeat the power of the land.
