The Bell-Ox That Saved Its Master
A young moran (warrior) had a favorite ox, a magnificent creature with a deep, resonant bell tied around its neck. The warrior loved this ox more than any other in his father's herd. One day, the warrior was tracking a stolen cow and became separated from his companions, deep in enemy territory. He was ambushed and was about to be killed. As he fought for his life, his favorite ox, which was miles away with the rest of the herd, suddenly became agitated. It began to bellow, a deep and powerful sound that carried for miles on the wind. The other warriors in his group, searching for their lost friend, heard the familiar sound of his favorite bell-ox and knew it was a sign. They followed the sound, found their companion just in time, and saved him from the ambush. The deep, spiritual bond (sinyati) between a Samburu man and his favorite ox had saved his life.
