Why Anansi's Head is Bald
Anansi went to visit the village of the Fowls. They were very hospitable and cooked a delicious meal of beans for him. Anansi, being greedy, wanted to take some home. He knew they would not let him, so he secretly filled his hat with hot beans and put it on his head. As he was saying his goodbyes, the heat from the beans began to burn his scalp. He started to fidget and dance about. "What is the matter, friend Anansi?" asked the Chief of the Fowls. "Oh, it is nothing," said Anansi, "It is just a new dance I have learned. It is called the 'Hot Hat Dance'." He began to sing and hop, pretending it was a performance. The Fowls were amused and watched him. But the pain became unbearable. Anansi could stand it no longer. He threw the hat from his head, and the hot beans scattered everywhere. The Fowls saw his trick and began to laugh and jeer. Anansi ran away in shame, but the hot beans had burned all the hair from the top of his head. That is why, to this day, all spiders have a bald spot.
