The Lion and the Hyena's Bargain
The Lion was a great hunter, but he was a terrible tracker. The Hyena was a poor hunter, but he had the best nose on the savanna. They made a pact. "You find the prey," said the Lion, "and I will kill it. We will share the meat." This worked for a time. But the Hyena was greedy and impatient. One day he found a herd of buffalo and, instead of waiting for the Lion, he decided to try and make a kill himself. He charged the herd, but he was not strong enough. He was trampled and badly injured, and the buffalo scattered. When the Lion arrived, the prey was gone and the Hyena was whimpering in the dust. The Lion said, "You were given the gift of a great nose, and I was given the gift of great strength. When we worked together, we both ate. But you were greedy and tried to have a gift that was not yours, and now we both go hungry." The story teaches a lesson about knowing your own role and the importance of respecting the skills of your partners.
