The Origin of the Zebra Totem

A long time ago, a great warrior and his family were lost in the arid plains, dying of thirst. They had almost given up hope when a herd of Zebra appeared. The lead stallion, seeing the people's suffering, did not run away. Instead, it pawed at the dry ground with its hoof. The warrior, understanding this as a sign, went to the spot and began to dig. Just below the surface, he found a life-saving spring of cool, fresh water. The family and their livestock were saved. From that day on, the warrior declared that the Zebra (Mbizi) was a sacred animal to his lineage. He and his descendants would never hunt or eat the zebra, for it was their savior. They became the people of the Zebra totem, the Mbizi clan. The story establishes the Zebra not as mere game, but as a wise and benevolent spiritual guide that is the founding ancestor of a major Shona clan.
