Tsuro and the Hyena's Stolen Fat
Tsuro the Hare and the Hyena killed a fat eland together. They rendered the fat into a large pot and agreed to save it. That night, the Hyena heard Tsuro shout, "I'm coming!" and run out of their cave. He returned a while later. "I was called to a birth," Tsuro explained. "What is the baby's name?" asked the Hyena. "His name is 'Just-Started'," said Tsuro. Later, Tsuro did it again. This time, the baby's name was "Halfway-Through." Finally, he ran out a third time and returned, saying the baby's name was "Completely-Finished." The next morning, the Hyena went to get the fat and found the pot scraped clean. He finally understood the meaning of the names and realized he had been tricked. He chased Tsuro, who, in his haste to escape, ran straight into the burrow of a great python, where he met a sticky end. The story is often told with this alternate ending to show that even the cleverest trickster will eventually be caught, and greed can lead to a fatal mistake.
