Why the Pig Always Digs in the Earth
In the beginning, the Pig was a clean and noble creature who lived in the sky as a servant to the Orishas. One of the Orishas gave the Pig a single, magical pearl and told him, "This pearl contains all the wisdom of the sky. Guard it with your life." The Pig was very proud of his treasure. One day, he was leaning over the edge of a cloud, looking down at the world below, when the pearl slipped from his grasp and fell to Earth. Horrified, the Pig leaped from the sky, chasing after it. He landed in the soft mud of a riverbank. He could not find the pearl. He had lost the wisdom of the sky. Ashamed and obsessed, he has never stopped searching for it. To this day, the pig ignores the sky and spends all its time with its snout to the ground, digging and rooting in the mud, forever searching for the divine wisdom it lost so long ago.
