The Lion and the Rat's Promise

A mighty Lion was sleeping in his den when a tiny Rat accidentally ran across his nose. The Lion awoke with a furious roar and trapped the little creature under his massive paw. "How dare you wake me!" he growled, preparing to kill the Rat. "Oh, please, Great King," squeaked the terrified Rat, "forgive me this time. I meant no harm. If you spare my life, I promise I will find a way to repay you one day." The Lion was so amused by the idea of a tiny rat helping the king of beasts that he laughed and let him go. Some time later, the Lion was caught in a hunter's trap made of thick ropes. He struggled with all his might, but the ropes held him fast. His roars of anger and fear echoed through the forest. The little Rat heard the roars and recognized the Lion's voice. He ran to the trap and saw the mighty king helpless. "Do not worry, my King," said the Rat. "I have come to repay my debt." He began to gnaw on the thick ropes with his sharp little teeth. He chewed and chewed, one rope after another, until the Lion was finally free. The Lion looked at the Rat with new respect. "I laughed at you once," he said. "But today, you have taught me that mercy is never wasted, and that even the smallest friend can be the greatest ally."
