The Tortoise's Judgment

A Dog and a Goat were arguing over a piece of meat. Unable to resolve the dispute, they agreed to go to the Tortoise, who was known for his slow and careful judgment. The Dog presented his case first. "I chased the antelope and brought it down," he said. "Therefore, the meat is mine." Then the Goat presented his case. "But it was my master's farm the antelope was eating from, and I was the one who alerted him, leading to the chase," he argued. "Therefore, the meat is mine." The Tortoise listened patiently. After a long silence, he took out his knife and carefully divided the piece of meat into two perfectly equal halves. He gave one half to the Dog and the other half to the Goat. "The Dog's speed was essential," he declared, "but without the Goat's watchfulness, there would have been no chase. Both of your contributions were necessary for the prize, so both of you shall share it equally." The Dog and the Goat, satisfied with the fairness of the judgment, thanked the Tortoise. His decision reinforced his reputation for wisdom, showing that true justice considers the value of every contribution, not just the final act.
