The Hyena's Disguise

A Hyena wanted to steal the goats from a village kraal. He knew the dogs would raise the alarm if he approached. So, he covered himself in the white ash from a dead fire, hoping to look like a pale spirit in the moonlight. He crept towards the goat pen. However, he had forgotten about the village Ram, who guarded the goats at night. The Ram was not fooled by the disguise. He did not see a spirit; he smelled a hyena. Instead of making a loud noise, the Ram waited until the Hyena was close, and then charged with his hard head, knocking the Hyena into the fire pit. The ash flew everywhere, and the Hyena, yelping in surprise and pain, ran away. The other goats were never even woken. The story teaches that a disguise can only fool the eyes, but it can never fool the nose, and a true guardian relies on all their senses, not just sight.
