The Crocodile and the Child of Faro

In Bambara cosmology, the crocodile is one of the sacred animals of Faro, the sky god who organized the world. A story is told of a woman who could not have children. She prayed at the edge of the Niger River every day. One day, a Crocodile surfaced and spoke to her. "Faro has heard your prayer. I will grant you a child, but you must promise to teach him the ways of the river and to respect me and my kind." The woman agreed. She soon gave birth to a healthy baby boy. She kept her promise, and as the boy grew, he spent much time by the river, learning its secrets and treating the crocodiles as his brothers. He became a great fisherman and a leader of his people, blessed with the wisdom of both land and water. The tale reinforces the sacred pact between the Bambara people and the Niger River, and the belief that certain animals, like the crocodile, are not mere beasts but are messengers and guardians acting on behalf of the gods.
