The Man Who Became a Buffalo

A Twa hunter was famous for his skill but also for his greed. He would kill more animals than his family needed and would not share the meat with the community. One day, he tracked a great buffalo deep into the forest. As he was about to shoot his arrow, the buffalo turned and spoke to him. "You hunt without respect," the buffalo said. "You take without giving. You have the body of a man but the heart of a hungry beast. So, a beast you shall be." The hunter felt his body begin to change. His skin thickened, horns grew from his head, and he lost the power of speech. He had become a buffalo. He was forced to join the herd, forever fleeing the hunters who were once his brothers. The story is a powerful cautionary tale about the dangers of greed and disrespecting the forest. In Batwa cosmology, the line between human and animal is thin, and those who do not act with human decency (sharing, respect) risk losing their humanity entirely.
