Kalulu the Hare and the Elephant's Tusks
The Hare, Kalulu, was jealous of the Elephant's magnificent tusks. He went to the Elephant and said, "Great one, your tusks are beautiful, but they must be heavy. I know a secret to make them lighter and stronger. You must bury them in a termite mound for one full moon." The Elephant, wanting to improve his prized possessions, believed the Hare. With great effort, he managed to pull out his tusks and buried them in a large termite mound. Kalulu, who had been watching, waited until the Elephant left and then immediately dug up the tusks. He took them to the village and traded them for a huge supply of beans and maize. A month later, the Elephant returned to the termite mound and found nothing. He realized he had been tricked by the cunning Hare. Humiliated and tuskless, the Elephant became an enemy of the Hare forever. The story shows Kalulu's classic trickster nature, using an opponent's vanity to get what he wants.
