The Jackal's Stolen Fat

The Jackal and the Hyena were partners. They killed a fat eland and decided to store the delicious fat in the hollow of a tree. The Jackal, being greedy, wanted the fat for himself. That night, he cried out, "I hear a sound! I am being called to a naming ceremony!" He ran off, but he really just went to the hollow tree and ate some of the fat. He did this three times, each time inventing an excuse and giving the "new child" a name. The first was named "Just-Begun," the second "Half-Eaten," and the third "All-Gone." The next day, when the Hyena went to get his share of the fat, he found the store empty. He saw the greasy tracks of the Jackal and knew he had been tricked. The Hyena chased the Jackal, who hid in a log. The Hyena started a fire to smoke him out, but the Jackal escaped through a small hole, leaving the foolish Hyena to be consumed by the fire he himself had set.
