The Tortoise Who Carried a Man to the Sky
A great Tswana chief wanted to send a message to the sky-world. He asked all the birds to carry his messenger, but the Eagle was too proud, and the Vulture was too impatient. A great Tortoise, who was known to be ancient and wise, came forward. "I will carry your messenger," he said. Everyone laughed. The Tortoise instructed the man to sit on his back. Then, the Tortoise began to chant a secret, ancient song. As he chanted, a great whirlwind formed around them, lifting them slowly and steadily from the ground. They rose higher and higher, past the clouds, until they reached the sky-world. The messenger delivered his message, and the Tortoise safely carried him back to earth with the same song. The story teaches that power is not always about speed or strength. The Tortoise, with his secret wisdom and connection to the ancient magic of the earth, could achieve what the powerful birds of the air could not.
