The Spider and the Hyena's Disguise
The Spider, a known trickster, was hungry. He knew the Hyena had a secret stash of dried fish. He went to the Hyena's den when the Hyena was out and stole a large fish. When the Hyena returned, he knew it was the Spider. The next day, the Hyena disguised himself as a traveling marabout (Islamic holy man). He went to the Spider's house and said, "I am a holy man with the power of sight. I can see that there is a thief in this village. For a small fee, I can identify him." The Spider, who had a guilty conscience, became very nervous. The disguised Hyena began to perform a fake ritual, chanting, "The thief is small... he has eight legs... he loves fish!" The Spider, terrified of being exposed, confessed to the "holy man" and offered to give back double the fish he had stolen to avoid punishment. The Hyena accepted the payment and then revealed his true identity, laughing at how he had used the Spider's own guilt to trick him.
