The Heron and the Founding of Gao
Before the great city of Gao was founded, the ancestors of the Songhai people were searching for the perfect place to build their capital. They traveled along the Niger River for many months. One day, their leader, a wise fisherman, saw a great white Heron land on a particular spot on the riverbank. The Heron did not move for a full day and a full night. The leader interpreted this as a powerful omen from the spirits of the river. "This is the spot," he declared. "The Heron has blessed this ground." They began to build the city of Gao on that location, and it grew to become the center of a mighty empire. The white heron became a sacred symbol of the city, representing divine guidance, patience, and the blessing of the river spirits that ensured the city's prosperity.
