The Hunter and the Gorilla's Pact
A Yaka hunter and his dog tracked a wounded gorilla deep into the forest. When they cornered it, the gorilla did not fight. Instead, it looked at the hunter and spoke in a human voice. "I am the guardian of this part of the forest," it said. "You have trespassed, and your dog has broken the peace. But I see your family is hungry." The gorilla then led the hunter to a plant he had never seen before. "The root of this plant, when prepared by a healer, can cure the 'wasting sickness'," the gorilla explained. "Take this knowledge back to your people. In return, you must promise that your dogs will never again hunt my family in this sacred grove." The hunter agreed. He learned how to prepare the medicine, which saved many people in his village. The hunter kept his promise, and that part of the forest became a place where no dogs were allowed to enter, respected as the domain of the gorilla spirit who had traded sacred knowledge for peace.
