The Pale Fox and the Stolen Word
After Amma, the creator god, had formed the earth, he planned to reveal his 'word'—the principles of order—to humanity through the Nommo spirits. However, Yurugu, the Pale Fox, was impatient and rebellious. Desiring the power for himself, he stole a piece of the divine placenta, which contained a fragment of the 'word,' and fled with it into the darkness. This act introduced chaos, disorder, and death into the perfect world Amma had planned. As the Fox moved across the earth, the tracks he left behind formed the first signs of divination. To this day, Dogon diviners draw a grid in the sand, representing the earth, and leave out peanuts to attract the Pale Fox. The tracks the fox leaves overnight as it takes the peanuts are interpreted as messages from the spirit world, revealing the future and commenting on the present. The Fox, though a source of chaos, thus becomes the unwilling source of knowledge for humanity.
